How tax works in the UK

Income tax is charged on taxable income. This is pay above the £12,570 personal allowance, which is reduced by £1 for every £2 of income over £100,000. Scotland sets its own bands. England, Wales and Northern Ireland share the rest-of-UK bands.

Employees also pay Class 1 National Insurance: 8% on earnings between £12,570 and £50,270, and 2% above that. It's the same across the UK.

Pension contributions are assumed to be made by salary sacrifice, which reduces your pay before income tax and National Insurance are worked out, so it saves both. Student loan repayments are 9% of earnings above your plan's threshold, and postgraduate loan repayments 6% above £21,000.
