All amounts before taxHow tax works in Hong Kong
Salaries tax is the lower of two calculations. Firstly, progressive rates from 2% to 17% on net chargeable income (income after deductions and allowances). Secondly, the standard rate of 15% on net income before allowances, rising to 16% on the part above HK$5,000,000. Tax is rounded down to the dollar.
The allowances covered here are the basic allowance of HK$145,000 and the married person's allowance of HK$290,000.
Employees generally pay mandatory MPF contributions of 5% of income, deductible up to HK$18,000 a year. Those earning less than HK$7,100 a month don't contribute. Anything you put in above the mandatory amount counts as tax-deductible voluntary contributions, up to HK$60,000 a year.
