How the calculation works
You enter a base salary (per year, month or week), an annual bonus and a pension contribution as a percentage of your base salary. The salary is turned into a yearly amount, and everything is converted into each country's currency before that country's rules are applied.
Each country is calculated for one tax year, on annual amounts. Pension contributions, allowances and reliefs are deducted to reach taxable income, the published bands are applied, and social security contributions are added where the country has them. Where a tax authority rounds to whole units, the calculator does too.
The effective rate is income tax and social security as a share of gross pay. Pension contributions and student loan repayments are shown but not counted as tax. The marginal rate is the tax and social security on an extra 100 of bonus, measured by running the calculation again, so allowance tapers and thresholds are included. Monthly and weekly figures are the yearly amounts divided by 12 and 52.
Nothing you enter in the calculator is stored: your inputs are sent to the server to be calculated and then discarded. They're also kept in the page address so a comparison can be bookmarked or shared, which means they're in your browser history and in any link you share. Page views are counted with Cloudflare Web Analytics, which doesn't use cookies, track individual visitors or record the part of the address that holds your inputs.
Assumptions
- You are tax-resident in the country for the whole tax year.
- Employment income only: no investment, rental or self-employment income.
- The pension percentage applies to base salary; the bonus is non-pensionable.
- Standard allowances only, unless a country's options say otherwise. Benefits in kind could change the calculation but are not included in this calculator.
Each country page explains its own rules and assumptions: Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, UK.
Exchange rates
Amounts are converted at the European Central Bank's euro foreign exchange reference rates, fetched from Frankfurter and kept for up to 12 hours. The rate used and its date are shown above the results. If the rates can't be fetched, you can enter one yourself; it's used for that comparison only.
Reference rates are indicative. Your bank or employer will convert at a different rate.
Feedback and privacy
Reports from the feedback form are filed as issues in a private GitHub repository that only the site's maintainer can see. They're anonymous: the form has no name or email field, and email addresses and phone numbers in the text are removed before a report is filed. Your calculator inputs are included only if you tick the box, and the form shows exactly what would be sent.
Because reports are anonymous, a report can't be traced back to you, so it can't be found and deleted on request. Please don't include anything personal.
Your IP address is used only to limit how many reports can be sent. It's kept in memory as a salted hash for about an hour, and it's never stored or sent with a report. The site's host, Render, handles every connection and processes IP addresses under its own privacy policy. Filed reports are stored by GitHub under its privacy statement.
To keep out automated spam, the feedback page uses Cloudflare Turnstile, which checks in the background that the form is being filled in by a person. It loads only on the feedback page, receives your IP address and details of your browser, and doesn't use them for advertising.
Official sources
Every rate and threshold comes from official published figures, such as the tax authority's rate tables.
