Residents pay no income tax on the first A$18,200 of taxable income, then rates from 15% to 45%. The low income tax offset takes up to A$700 off the tax of people on lower incomes.
Most people also pay the 2% Medicare levy, which phases in above a low-income threshold. Without private hospital cover, higher earners pay the Medicare levy surcharge as well, at 1% to 1.5%.
Employers pay the super guarantee, 12% of salary, on top of pay. Salary-sacrificed super reduces taxable income, up to the A$32,500 concessional cap, which also counts the employer's contributions.
